MY BROTHER'S KEEPER
Mitakuye oyasin, “All my relations,” from the words of my wife's Lakota language they could never be more profound. I, like anyone of conscience, could not stand idle as the suffering radiates from our relatives on the Gulf coast. With no time for whining about how this atrocity could have happened or who may have dropped the ball in their rescue efforts, I, along with many, have a lot of hard work to do. It’s a wonderful thing to see all the good spirits come together for all the right reasons.
I have heard people compare New Orleans to a third world country as though they were in shock to think this could happen in America. Tragically enough yet not to compare the recent wrath of nature with an ongoing situation across this country and where many have now witnessed the indifference of your governments response to the afflicted in Louisiana, imagine a century of third world conditions that have not been addressed right here in America, because they have.
Now imagine the people from this same third world environment in America’s #1 poverty stricken (Shannon Co. S.D.) county to be corresponding with us in hopes of lending to the needs of those who are suffering to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. These are the people of Pine Ridge, South Dakota, the people of Rosebud, South Dakota and many other Native American homesteads across North America. Most of these people have little more than a prayer to offer, but there prayers are powerful. Some have offered to come and help when appropriate and others have sent prayer ties, tobacco offerings and sage. Not all native people are thriving from the gaming industry yet even the poorest offer of themselves.
I, like many, cannot sit back and do nothing yet we must have a game plan that works and therefore we are working to stop the suffering of the many victims that have become homeless and disoriented. Our program “My Brother's Keeper” will focus on animal welfare as there have been many horrible sightings of dogs being tied to trees, locked in kennels and houses, cats trying to claw their way into a ceiling from the rising water and on and on. Pets of all kinds from miniature ponies to pot belly pigs, parrots, reptiles and domestic stock animals are in need of safe and compassionate harvest. It is our intent to maintain a data base to the best of our ability so that the rightful owners may retrieve their pet after they get back on their feet with the support of temporary adoptive pet programs. Imagine losing everything you own and still having a chance of being reunited with a love pet. As we venture into rural Louisiana and the New Orleans suburbs we will be taking on a tremendous task as this venture is no vacation but rather a serious hard working environment that will call for tough minds and bodies in our volunteer workforce.
People will always come first during our extraction efforts however, we will be in alliance with other relief teams such as the American Red Cross, the National Guard and state and county police including the local wildlife management officials. We do have a nonprofit # available should you or a friend might want to donate to this rescue effort. 100% of any donations received go directly to the “My Brother's Keeper” fund and the relief efforts. We are not funded by any organization or government as it stands and we wish to make your contribution apart of our online competitive pledge campaign to maintain accountability while at the same time challenging the hearts of many a compassionate warrior. In the "Spirit of Crazy Horse” we value your pledge be it monetary, provisions or prayer.
